Frequently Asked Install Questions Explained
Today we’re talking all things install! We are a full-service flooring store, meaning we not only sell flooring products, but we can also coordinate and execute your flooring install of any products purchased through our showroom.
We’re going to answer all of our most asked flooring questions in one spot, keep reading for all the details.
Q: Are your installers employees of Mouery’s Flooring, or are they sub-contracted?
A: We have over a dozen highly skilled installation crews. While they are technically 1099 contractors, they work exclusively with us, and install for us consistently each week.
Good contractors are not always easy to come by, but we’ve remain committed to finding Springfield’s best flooring installers who are going to provide the most attention to detail and highest quality of work. We would be nothing without our dedicated and hard working installers.
Q: Does you installation work come with a warranty?
A: YES! We offer a one year installation warranty on all projects we install. Have any concerns after your install? Give us a call and we will make it right!
Q: How do I get scheduled for my flooring install?
A: Once you have selected your floors and we’ve come out and estimated your project, and you decide to move forward with the project, your first payment will be due; this is the payment for the materials + taxes. Once this payment is made we will order your product if it is special order, or we will mark stock if it is a product we have in-stock in our warehouse. Then Brady, our installation manager, will give you a call to get you scheduled. During this call he will let you know when your flooring will be delivered (hard surface only), and how many days your install will last.
Q: How long does the install process typically take?
A: There are several variables that effect how long the install will take such as amount of flooring being installed, if the installers will need to remove the existing floors, if they will need to move furniture, if there is any subfloor repair needed, etc, but most installs are completed in 1-3 days, and larger projects are typically done within a week!
Q: What time will the installers show up and how long will they stay?
A: Our installers typically arrive around 9am and work until around 4pm or 5pm. Occasionally, they only need a 1/2 day to finish on a job, in which case your install could start in the afternoon. If this is the case, Brady will let you know when he calls to schedule it.
Q: When is your next available install date?
A: We are typically 2-4 weeks out on install! During busy seasons we are closer to 6-8 weeks out. Need it sooner? Let us know and we’ll see how we can help.
Q: If your installers take out my existing floor what do they do with it?
A: Carpet and pad will be removed and brought back to our store to recycle the pad and dispose of the carpet. Hard surface will be removed and brought back to the store to be disposed of.
Q: What if I have extra product left over from my install?
A: You will want to keep at least one box of hard surface flooring on hand in case any future repairs are needed. If you have additional and it is an in-stock product, unopened full boxes can be returned within 30 days of purchase. We do not accept returns on special ordered products.
Left over carpet? Feel free to bring it by the showroom and we can bind it into a custom area rug(s) starting at $2.00/linear foot.
Q: Do I need to be present for the install?
A: This is completely up to you! As long as there is a way for the installers to get in you do not have to be there. If you feel more comfortable being there, that is no problem! This decision is completely based on your comfort level.
Q: What can I do to save money on my flooring install?
A: There are a few options for savings! You can choose to remove the existing flooring yourself, remove and replace your own trim, move existing furniture, or even lay your own flooring (if you’re a DIY-er).
Q: What can I expect if I am replacing my existing flooring with a thicker product?
A: Going from a thinner product to a thicker product will necessitate that baseboards be removed and reapplied slightly higher.
Q: What can I expect if I am replacing my existing flooring with a thinner product?
A: Going from a thicker product to a thinner product will create a small gap under door frames and under existing trim. This can be combated by either adding quarter round to existing trim, removing existing trim and moving it down slightly, or building up the existing subfloor to the height of your original flooring.
*If you choose to move the existing trim downward, you will still have a slight gap remaining under door jambs. Moving trim downward may also result in needing to paint the small section of the wall where the trim was at originally.
Q: I may need subfloor repair, do your installers do that?
A: Our installers use floor patch to help even out an un-even floor when needed. As far as plywood subfloor repair, our installers can repair small amounts, but larger repairs will need to be taken care of before they come in to start installing the floor.
Q: Where do the installers set up their work station and cut the product?
A: Typically the installers will set up their work station in the driveway or back of the home depending on where they are installing the flooring at. They will not bring the saws inside to make their cuts.
Q:If I’m planning on repainting my walls and cabinets when should I do my flooring?
A: If a highly skilled painter will be doing the painting, they will want to paint at the very end of the process after the flooring is installed. If you are painting the home yourself, it is your own preference. If you’re a little bit of a messy painter, we recommend painting before your new flooring is installed so you don’t get any on the floors!
Q: Can I put new carpet over my existing pad?
A: While you can, this is not something we recommend. Doing this will void both the manufacturers carpet warranty as well as your 1 year installation warranty from Mouery’s.
Q: I am taking up my own carpet, should I leave the tack strip or pull it up?
A: If you are replacing carpet with carpet, and the tack strip is still secured to the sub floor than leave it! If you are replacing carpet with hard surface the tack strip will need to be removed. Whether getting new carpet or new hard surface flooring you will need to remove the staples used to hold down the old padding.
