It’s been a busy week in the showroom with the arrival of over 40 NEW area rugs! We’re excited to be bringing in a new collection (Ellen Degeneres by Loloi) and loads of new styles and sizes, including more of the smaller (3’x5’) and larger sizes (13’x15’) you all have been asking for.
In honor of all of our new rug arrivals we wanted to: equip you with a rug size guide, showcase our new arrivals, best sellers, and tips for styling rugs together.
Rugs aren’t simply for decoration- they are a wonderful organizational tool! Follow this helpful guide to creatively use rugs to arrange furniture and give your rooms a beautiful flow.
Measure
Determine the dimensions of your room with a measuring tape. We can’t emphasize the importance of this enough! Gently place tape to outline the area where you want your rug, and consider the location of doors and how they will open. Do these simple things up-front and you can buy a rug with confidence.
Optical Illusions
Rugs can create an optical illusion; make this work in your favor! An undersized rug makes the room appear smaller and disconnected. When in doubt, go for the bigger size. It will unify the furniture and make the room appear bigger than it actually is.
18” of floor
Keep at least 18” of bare floor exposed by the rug’s edges. This is a classic rule that works for almost all rooms. If your room is smaller, then feel free to bend this rule a bit to meet your needs. The key is to get the proportions of the space right.
Bend the Rules
With all this said, remember that these are standard rules for standard rooms. If you have an unusual room layout or furniture arrangement, you’ll have to be flexible. Ultimately, if you think it looks good, go for it!
Living Spaces
All legs on Rug
Rug size: 9’x12’
This large rug size generally allows the back legs of every piece of furniture to sit on the rug. If you have an oversized room, we would recommend going even biger with a 13’x15’.
Front legs on, back legs off
Rug Size: 8’x10’
With this size you’ll most likely have all front legs of furniture on the rug, with the back legs off. Or only some of the front legs will be on the rug.
All legs off
Rug size: 5’x8’
When you have a smaller living room or prefer to keep all of your furniture off of the rug, go with a 5’x8’.
dining areas
Four chairs
Rug Size: 5’x8’
5’x8’ rugs are a great choice for smaller sized dining tables with four chairs.
Four to six chairs
Rug size: 8’ Round
We love the look of a round rug under a round (or square) dining table to balance the space.
Six to eight chairs
Rug size: 9’x12’
Typically a 8’x10’ or a 9’x12’ rug will work under a dining table with six to eight chairs.
Bedrooms
Twin sized beds
Rug Size: 8’x10’ (may vary)
Since twin beds are small, take the bed’s positioning and overall size of the room into consideration. For an oversized room with two twin sized beds a 9’x12’ would work well. If there is only one twin sized bed in the room we recommend a 5’x8’.
Full size bed
Rug size: 5’x8’
Lay the rug horizontally under the bed. Let your room size dictate just how much rug you want showing at the foot of the bed.
Queen size bed
Rug size: 8’x10’
Just like a full size bed, you’ll want to lay a rug horizontally under the bed. Both an 8’x10’ and 9’x12’ will work, but remember the larger rug has the effect of making your room appear bigger.
King size bed
Rug size: 9’x12’
A king size bed calls for a least an 8’x10’ and usually a 9’x12’. Anything smaller will appear out of proportion.
Best Sellers
We’ve hardly been able to keep these two rugs in-stock since started carrying the Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines rugs. It was recently announced that Hanover: Granite | Granite will not be produced anymore.. we have a few of these rugs left in our showroom.. so get them while you can!
indoor outdoor rugs
Summer is HERE.. which means more time on the back porch or patio. These are just a few examples of rugs that would be the perfect addition to your outdoor entertaining space.
TRENDING: LAYERED RUGS
We are absolutely loving the rug trend where a textured rug is laid as the base, and a printed patterned rug is layered on top. It’s the perfect solution for a dimension texture & pop of color rug combo. Our favorite for the textured base is the ‘Edge’ collection, and our favorite patterned rug for the top would be any rug from the ‘Loren’ or ‘Layla’ collection of Loloi Rugs.
Pro Tip: We also love the look of a cowhide layered on top of the textured rug instead of a printed pattern! You can find all of our in-stock authentic Brazilian cowhide rugs here.
