At Mouery’s Flooring, we’ve helped countless homeowners across Southwest Missouri—from Springfield to Nixa, Ozark, Branson, Republic, and beyond—transform their bathrooms into beautiful, functional spaces they love. One of the most important parts of any shower project isn’t just what you see on the surface—it’s the work that goes on behind the scenes.
That’s why we exclusively use the Schluter® waterproofing system on all our custom shower installations. It’s the gold standard when it comes to protecting your home from leaks, mold, and long-term water damage.
If you' haven’t had a chance to visit our showroom and talk with one of our commission-free team members, you can reference the Schluter Shower Checklist to know all of the elements that encompass the Schluter waterproofing system.
From tile selection to smart design features, here are 8 expert tips to help you design a shower that’s not just stylish—but built to last.
1. Start with the Right Tile Material
We have thousands of tiles to choose from in our showroom located at 2516 W. Battlefield Rd. in Springfield, MO.
We always begin by helping our customers pick the right type of tile for their space. Bring your inspiration photos and our team will help you in selecting your materials!
Porcelain tile is our go-to for showers. It’s super durable, low-maintenance, and perfect for wet environments.
Ceramic tile can also work well, as long as it’s rated for wet areas.
If you’re going for a more upscale look, natural stone like marble or travertine is stunning—but keep in mind, it needs regular sealing.
Glass tile is another sleek option, but it does show water spots more easily and needs a bit more upkeep.
2. Choose the Right Tile Size for Your Design
Tile size can make a big difference in how your shower looks and feels. Below are two showers that we recently completed. We’ll help you figure out which tile size works best for your space and your goals.
Small tiles are great for curves, shower floors, or custom mosaics. We love using them in niches or as accent areas.
This shower has a mix of stacked subway tile, mosaics, and decorative bullnose trim.
Large format tiles offer a clean, modern look and can make smaller showers feel more open—but they require precise installation.
This shower has all large format 24”x48” tile installed on both the walls and envelope cut to fit the shower floor.
3. Don’t Overlook Grout Color
Grout may seem like a small detail, but trust us—it makes a big impact.
A matching grout color creates a smooth, cohesive look.
Contrasting grout can highlight the shape of the tile and add some bold definition.
And when it comes to cleaning, darker grout tends to hide stains better than white or light gray.
We’ll help you choose a grout that complements your tile and your lifestyle. We carry a large variety of grouts by Bostic, including their Dimensions grout line which includes an array of shimmery grout colors.
4. Add Functional, Stylish Design Elements
This is where your shower really starts to feel like yours. A few of our favorite add-ons include:
Mosaics and accent tiles to give your space personality.
A shower bench for comfort and function—perfect for relaxing or shaving.
Lighted niches that bring both storage and ambiance to your space.
We’ll walk you through what’s possible and design something that works with your everyday routine.
5. Pick the Right Drain for the Job
There are a few drain options to consider, and we’ve installed them all:
Linear drains are sleek and modern, but they need a little extra attention to prevent clogs.
Point drains (the classic center drain) are easy to maintain and work great for most setups.
Tileable drains give you that seamless look and are perfect for custom, high-end showers.
No matter what you choose, we make sure it’s installed for proper drainage and long-term reliability.
6. If You Have Hard Water, Tile Choice Matters
Living in Southwest Missouri, we know hard water is a common challenge for homeowners. That’s why we recommend:
Porcelain tiles for their durability and resistance to mineral buildup.
Matte or textured finishes to help hide water spots and improve traction.
And if you go with natural stone, we’ll make sure it’s sealed properly to stand up to the environment.
We’re happy to guide you through the best materials for both style and performance.
7. Keep Maintenance Simple
Nobody wants to spend their weekends scrubbing grout or fighting stains. Here’s what we recommend:
For porcelain, ceramic and glass tile we recommend the FILA Neutral Everyday Cleaner for everyday maintenance, FILA Heavy Duty cleaner for tough grease, and FILA Bathroom Soap Scum Remover for bathroom application
If you go with natural stone, we’ll help set up a regular sealing schedule and help you determine which products would be best for your application.
Consider adding a water softener to reduce buildup and make cleaning easier.
We’ll also show you the best ways to maintain your new shower so it keeps looking brand new.
8. Think Long-Term with Safety & Comfort Features
Whether you're building your forever home or just planning ahead, small upgrades can make a big difference:
Textured tiles improve grip and reduce slip risk.
Heated floors take your shower experience to the next level—especially during Missouri winters.
We also install zero-entry showers, grab bars, and other features that improve accessibility without sacrificing style.
When we design your shower, we think beyond today—we want it to serve your family well for years to come.
