What are they?
Cowhides are tanned leather with the hair kept on. They are a safe by-product of animals being used for other purposes. When a tannery receives a hide, the first thing they do is wash it. Typically in the leather tanning process, after the hide is washed the hair would be removed, but because these hides are being used for decoration the hair will be kept on and the tanning process will continue. Once the hide is tanned, trimming takes place to ensure an even look, and the cowhide is ready for it’s forever home.
What do you do with them?
While a cowhide can be styled any-way you like, our favorite way to style them (and the easiest) is to use them on the floor as a rug.
Do cowhides only look good with rustic or western decor?
Absolutely NOT!! Cowhides are growing in popularity among (nearly) all decorating styles. If you’re still not sure if a cowhide would look good in your home, we’ve compiled some cowhide inspiration pictures to show you just how amazing they look in a variety of applications.
Where do they come from?
Each of our authentic hides come from Brazil and are unparalleled in their quality- and if you’ve been following us for any time you know quality is one of our top priorities.
Healthier cows = healthier hides
These cows are not cramped in their grazing quarters, but rather have room to roam and are fed the highest quality food, in turn providing the highest quality of hide even after the leathering process which would nearly deteriorate a cowhide of lesser quality. The hide quality is also directly related to the durability and life span of the cowhide rug.
Less than 1% of cowhide retailers sell Brazilian cowhides, so it is important to understand that our standard of quality is not necessarily the standard you may find online or that other retailers have to offer. When you picture a cowhide in your mind you may be thinking of a very generic black and white hide; but that is not only what you will find. Brazilian hides have a HUGE range of colors, everything from pure white, deep black, brindle, speckles, spots, grey and more with no two hides being the same.
Our authentic Brazilian cowhide rugs start at only $275!
How do I clean them?
Cowhides can be easily cleaned and maintained by vacuuming them (without a beater bar) or sweeping them with a broom, and can be spot cleaned with a small amount of soap and water.
